Experiment

Making everyday life a little easier

A small everyday hack from Sweden: the code from your driving licence as a home screen widget, so you can show your phone at the till instead of digging out your wallet.

A phone with a home screen widget showing a made-up code in Data Matrix style, and a handwritten note with an arrow: The code from your driving licence, easy to reach.
The code in the image is made up. Never share your real one.

In Sweden, almost everyone has a personnummer, a personal identity number that is used far beyond government, by banks, healthcare and retail alike. It is not treated as a secret. Many Swedish retailers have dropped plastic loyalty cards and use the personnummer as the customer identifier instead: to link a purchase to a loyalty account, handle returns and warranties, or send a digital receipt. At the till you either type it in or hand over your driving licence so the cashier can scan the small Data Matrix code on the back.

This experiment puts that code on your phone instead. A small web tool, built with AI (Claude), reads the code from a photo and redraws it sharp and at the right size, with exactly the same data. Everything happens in your browser, and the image is never uploaded. I have tested it on iPhone at Clas Ohlson, Kjell & Company, Naturkompaniet and Coop. It is not ID, though: if someone needs to check who you are, the licence still applies.
